A Choice No Young Person Should Have to Make

 

“Should I do drugs or should I eat?”

 

This was the heartbreaking reality for a young man I'll call Chege, who I met after speaking on decision-making at last year’s Christian youth leadership conference.  While stories of drug abuse might seem familiar, his story cut me to the core.

 

Chege grew up in a single-parent home where food was often scarce, and some days, completely absent. He didn’t start using drugs for pleasure or escape—he did it to survive!  You see, every day, his peers who sold drugs always had enough to eat, and they were willing to share—but only if he joined them in using.

 

Some days, saying, "Yes." to drugs meant that Chege not only ate, but also brought food home to his mother and younger siblings. What kind of choice is that for a young person to make?

 

No one should have to choose between hunger and harming their future.​​​
